Know your hair porosity

Hair porosity is the ability for your hair to absorb and retain moisture. If you have low porosity hair, the cuticles on your hair are tightly bound. This means it repels moisture and is hard to process. This type of hair benefits from lighter products closer to the liquid side. Medium or Normal porosity hair has looser cuticles. This type of hair can been processed with predictable results. High porosity hair has open cuticles usually caused by damage. It is important that leave in conditioners and sealers to lock in moisture. If you want to learn more, you can read about it here: https://www.naturallycurly.com/texture-typing/hair-porosity

Read the ingredients in your hair products

Why? Because you want to avoid products that have paraben, sulfates, and silicone. Parabens are preservatives that are known to be an endocrine disruptor and can mess with the levels of estrogen in the human body. Sulfates are also a preservative, but work by emulsifying the product aka they are what make it bubly. Silicones are not exactly bad, but silicones do coat the hair in a slick substance. This prevents hair from absorbing moisture, so deep conditioning hair with a product with silicone in it defeats the purpose because the moisture will never hit your actual hair. Sleep on a satin pillowcase or with a satin bonnet on

So I know a lot of us read about the debacle of the lady gentrifying the satin bonnet, but yes everyone should be sleeping either with a satin bonnet on or on a satin pillowcase. This because it helps with breakage caused by hair drying out. Why is your hair drying out at night? Because your cotton pillowcases are absorbing all of the oils in your hair. Osmosis ladies. Osmosis.

My favorite satin pillows can be found here: https://amzn.to/33ZoTCg
