On Campus Resources that Support your Wellbeing

Navigating college can be difficult. It’s your first time being on your own and truly having to figure out how to manage every aspect of your life. From keeping a schedule to eating healthy, and finding your place within the social circles, college can be daunting. But don’t fret, there are plenty of resources on campus to help you out! Now, this list is based on the college I attended Kennesaw State University. Hooty Hoo!

We are going to start with why you’re at school. Your education. There are a few people that can help you if you are struggling in school.

  • Academic Advising

    • Your Academic Advisor is there to help you plan your schedule, give feedback on courses, and to help you find solutions to any academic problems you may run into.

  • Library

    • Your library is a great place to find source material, check out textbooks, and study. Most libraries also have computers with all of the software you may need for your major, and printing capabilities if you’ve run out of ink.

  • Academic Support & Tutoring Services - This is the place to go to if you need some more hands-on help when it comes to your classes. Tutoring services can be divided by major or discipline. Some schools may also have English as a Second Language Center, Supplemental Instruction, and Writing Center for you to take advantage of.

Now that you’re doing great with classes, you can prep for that first internship at the Career Center. The Department of Career Planning and Development is there to help you enter the workforce as smoothly as possible. Resources that they offer include events such as

      • Networking Workshops

      • Job Fair Preparation Workshops

      • Virtual Interview Preparation

      • Job & Internship Fairs

      • Career Exploration Nights

      • Job Fair Prep Days

      • Owl Professional Development Conference

      • Senior Cookout

They also provide Academic specific resources such as resume, CV, Cover Letter examples. Most Career Career centers also have resources for nontraditional students such as Adult Learners, Students With Disabilities, Distance Learners, International Students, Student-Athletes, and Veterans.

Lastly, if you aren’t sure what kind of path is best for you, your Career Center may offer you a Career Self Assessment.“Career assessment is an important part of the career planning process because it allows you to identify and reflect on your values, interests, abilities, and personality preferences. Having this knowledge is very helpful in career decision making.” - KSU

Next, if classes have got you all stressy and depressy, or you have or develop a mental health problem, then the Counseling and Psychological Services is where you need to be. The goal of this department is to “support the academic mission of students by enhancing students’ educational, career, personal and interpersonal development.” Services offered by the Counseling and Psychological Services include counseling (individual, group, and couples), psychiatric services, case management, as well as Workshops.

Now that we’ve gotten our mental health in order, its time to take care of your body. There are a few places where this can happen. The first is the Department of Sports and Recreation. This is your school’s gym.lol. The rec center can offer lots of access to activities like aquatics, club sports, intramural sports, and fitness programs. Once you’re done with the gym, you can then make sure you’re taking care of your insides by visiting the Nutrition Services department. Here you can get nutrition counseling, see cooking demonstrations, attend nutrition workshops, and receive tobacco cessation help. If that doesn’t manage to keep you healthy, then you can go to Student Health Services. Here, they help with a number of issues. The first being illness diagnosis and care. They can also help with chronic disease management, perform routine exams, including physicals, and conduct STD testing and treatment. But wait, you can even get your updated immunizations.

Now that those are in order, its time for some fun! The best place for that is through Student Life. Departments withing student life include:

  • Cultural and Community Centers - serves as home to an array of programs that focus on academic enrichment, campus and community engagement, and cultural and identity exploration for students.

  • Fraternity & Sorority Life - fosters a community of values-based organizations through a commitment to accountability, courageous leadership, and stewardship

  • Housing and Residence Life - My favorite! Housing and Residence Life assist students in successfully navigating and maximizing their on-campus college experience.

  • Student Government Association - this is a group of students who act as representatives to the body at large and advocate for the needs of the students.

  • Student Media - provide news, information, and entertainment to the campus

  • Student Organizations - organizations geared towards the different interests of students.

Now that you’ve made some bomb friends, you may want to find a bae. Lot’s of campuses have inexpensive venues great for dates. Kennesaw State has the Bailey Performance Center, Bentley Rare Book Gallery, Museum of History and Holocaust Education, and Zuckerman Museum of Art.

Lastly, its time to get your money straight. Which means it is time to head over to the

Financial Aid office. Here, their goal is to provide financial assistance and resources to students. They will help you determine the different types of financial aId and which you are eligible for. They will walk you through applying for student aid and help find and fill out the necessary financial aid documents and forms. Sadly, this is as far as most financial aid offices will go. Personal finances are not taught here :(

And that is it! That is your complete guide to On-Campus resources that support your holistic wellbeing! Feel free to share this with your friends or parents you may know with kiddos going off to college soon:)

Thanks y'all!!!
